Filling

Filling is a method to restore normal function and appearance of a tooth damaged by decay.

While making a filling, first decaying tooth tissue is removed and the area affected by the decay is cleaned. Then the spaces cleaned are filled with a filling material.

The spaces into which bacteria can enter are covered with fillings, and fillings help prevent progress of the decay. Materials used for filling are gold, porcelain , composite resin (tooth colored fillings ) , and an amalgam ( an alloy of mercury, silver , copper, tin and sometimes zinc ).
