What is Thalassemia?

Thalassemia is an inherited (genetic) blood disorder that reduces the body’s ability to produce healthy haemoglobin and causes anaemia.  

The severity of the disease depends on the number of genes that are affected.

A thalassemia carrier does not have any symptoms or health problem. But a carrier can pass on the thalassemia gene to their children.

How will/did my child get Thalassemia?

In order for a child to get thalassemia, both parents must carry the trait for thalassemia. If both parents carry the trait (also known as “thalassemia minor”), there is a huge chance with each pregnancy that the child will be born with the severe form of the disease (thalassemia major). Children with thalassemia disease need blood transfusions every 4-6 weeks for the rest of their life which is a huge torture for children. They can die before reaching adulthood if no proper treatment is given.

Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) in Fertility Treatments

For couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a procedure undertaken to screen the embryos for a host of genetic diseases and disorders to ensure the delivery of a healthy baby. Genetic diagnosis helps physicians to identify some genetic defects within the embryo, prior to implantation, before the pregnancy is established.

Genetic diagnosis is normally recommended for couples where one or both of the parents are a known carrier of Thalassemia. The procedure involves the removal of one or two cells from an embryo which are then screened for genetic abnormalities. Genetic diagnosis identifies the embryos with chromosome abnormalities, thereby avoiding their transfer during an in vitro fertilization procedure.
