Cholesteatoma

Cholesteatoma is enlargement of skin layer in the eardrum to the middle ear usually as a result of recurrent ear infections.
Cholesteatomas often take the form of a cyst or a pocket and develop inside the ear, spreading layers of dead skin around. Over time, cholesteatoma grows steadily and destroys bone structures surrounding the middle ear. If cholesteatoma continues to grow, hearing loss, dizziness and facial paralysis may occur.

Treatment
During initial therapy, the ear is carefully cleaned and antibiotics and ear drops are administered. Treatment aims to stop ear discharge and control the infection. Large and complicated cholesteatomas usually require surgical treatment to protect the patient against serious complications. Surgical treatment is usually done under general anesthesia.
