Thallium Scintigraphy

Thallium scintigraphy is based on whether radioactive substances such as thallium are taken up by heart muscle or not. The radiation dose which the patient is exposed to during the test is no more than having a normal chest x-ray.

Thallium scintigraphy is used to,

  • Diagnose cardiovascular diseases,
  • Determine viability of heart muscle after a heart attack,
  • Determine relevance of chest pains with heart disease,
  • Screen test diseases in patients who are at risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Discover significance of vascular disease in patients with cardiovascular disease
  • Predict the efficacy of treatment after coronary artery bypass surgery or drug therapy
  • Detect if patients have had a heart attack or not, establish scope and severity of a previous heart attack.
