Brain Tumors

Brain tumor means abnormal or uncontrolled growth of cells in the brain. Tumors grow inside the skull and pressurize the brain. They show symptoms depending on the region they are in and the area they apply pressure to. The most common symptoms of brain tumors include the following:

  • Headache
  • Visual impairments
  • Epilepsy -like convulsions
  • Partial paralysis and loss of sensation in some parts of the body
  • Severe vomiting
  • Loss of some physical abilities
  • Personality disorders , significant changes in mood
  • Weakness and numbness
  • Contractions
  • Difficulty in understanding
  • Loss of balance

It is not definitely known what the factors that cause brain tumors are. However, exposure of people to a number of hazardous chemicals is thought to be effective in the formation of brain tumors.

Brain tumors can be benign or malign. Benign brain tumors do not contain cancer cells. General characteristics of benign tumors are:

  • They can be usually removed by surgery and do not reappear.
  • They do not spread into the brain tissue surrounding them.
  • Due to pressure they exert on the area surrounding them, unlike benign tumors in other organs, they may sometimes lead to life threatening situations.
  • Albeit very rarely, a benign brain tumor can develop into a malignant brain tumor.

Malignant brain tumors have the following characteristics:

  • They contain cancer cells.
  • They rapidly grow and penetrate into healthy tissue around them.
  • In very rare cases, they can spread to spinal cord, even to other parts of the body, i.e. they metastasize.

Whether benign or malignant, surgical treatment is always the best treatment method for brain tumors. However, some brain tumors may be very close to the brain and at high risk for surgery. For this reason, surgical operation can not be performed, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are applied.
