Oncologic Surgery

As the one of the most important forms of treatment in cancer treatment, oncological surgery involves the treatment of the cancer area by surgery. These operations should be performed by specialist physicians.

Oncological surgery applications differ as follows:

  • Curative (Therapeutic) Surgery: For therapeutic surgical applications, the prerequisite is that the disease has not metastasized, that is, it is limited to the organ or lymph from which it originates. This type of intervention can completely remove the tumour and clean the cancerous tissue. However, there are situations where complete removal of the tumour is not possible.  In this case, debulking surgery is applied to reduce the mass.

  • Palliative (Relief) Surgery: This is the general name of surgical methods that are performed to eliminate symptoms and, in some cases, are used in conjunction with treatments to eliminate cancer. Applications like installing stents to relieve congestion caused by a mass, placing prosthetics on weakened bones, etc. can be considered in this category.

  • Prophylactic Surgery: It means the surgical removal of the tissue or organ that is at risk of developing cancer. Intestinal and gallbladder polyps, skin lesions, etc. can be treated with prophylactic surgery.
