Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

In this operation, a sleeve having a volume about 100-150 ml is formed by cutting through the larger side of the stomach. Weight loss occurs through two mechanisms.

  • Limiting Effect: A mechanical limitation with the reduction of gastric volume and weight loss due to diminishing gastric movements
  • Endocrine Effect: By reducing the GHRELIN hormone known as the hunger hormone, secreted from the extracted part of the stomach, a feeling of satiation is ensured. Ghrelin is a peptide protein secreted by the cells of the upper part of the stomach called fundus. It is a strong stimulator of the appetite increasing region of the brain. With the sleeve gastrectomy, the fundus region producing Ghrelin is removed, thus appetite is reduced, which contributes to weight loss.
