Especially bone lengthening surgery has provided a solution to shortening of arms and legs resulting from stroke, fracture, inflammation, and certain bone diseases.
Bone lengthening surgery is based on cutting the bone to be lengthened, followed by attachment of an apparatus to upper and lower parts of the bone using screws or wires, which will be adjusted to move the healing cut apart by a certain length everyday(around 1 mm per day). During lengthening phase, it is monitored whether the bone fills up the gap opened, by regular checks. After the lengthening phase is complete, new bone tissue in the gap opened is allowed to harden.
Arm lengthening operations are relatively less common.
Leg and arm lengthening procedures for aesthetic purposes can be performed in a type of dwarfism called achondroplasia. In this condition, torso is in normal size, whereas the arms and legs are short. In these cases, leg lengthening up to 20-25 cm and arm lengthening up to 10-12 cm can be achieved, provided the treatment is initiated early..
In the case of properly chosen and well followed cases, satisfactory results reaching up to 90% have been obtained.
