Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids or piles, in other words, are described as the expansion or varix of the veins in the rectum.

Causes of hemorrhoids are as follows:

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhea
  • Pregnancy
  • Hereditary factors
  • Excessive straining during defecation
  • Excessive use of laxatives ( stool softeners ) or enema

The most common symptom is bleeding from the anus during straining. Other than that,

  • a rectal prolapse towards outside during straining,
  • Itchiness around the anus,
  • Rectal pain,
  • Palpable painful swelling in the anus area

are among its common symptoms.

Primarily non-surgical treatments should be tried in the case of hemorrhoids. These are:

  • Sitz baths ( sitting in hot water for 10-15 minutes )
  • Applying certain ointments or taking oral hemorrhoid pills.
  • Bipolar coagulation : In this method, the blood vessels that cause hemorrhoids or piles are burned.
  • Laser coagulation. It is a method of reduction of vessels with a laser beam.
  • Infrared method: It is based on deflating hemorrhoid piles.
  • Sclerotherapy: A chemical substance is injected into the anus area to sclerose that area. This causes the veins feeding the hemorrhoid piles to sclerose, and hence swelling, cracking and expansion of another vein is prevented.
  • Band ligation: It is a procedure in which a rubber band which looks like an elastic hair band is applied using an anoscope which is inserted into the anus. Thus, that hemorrhoid vein is strangulated.

If non- surgical methods don't help make progress, surgical methods are applied.
