Hip Problems

Hip joint is one of the largest and most important joints of the body. Each hip joint has to carry half of the body weight and this load is further increased during movements such as walking, running, climbing stairs, and squatting, and it can rise up to several times of the body weight.

Hip disorders commonly manifest themselves with hip pain . The causes of hip disorders can be classified as follows :

  • Congenital causes: In early childhood period, the most important disorder of the hip joint is congenital hip dislocation. If this condition is not treated in due time, it causes pronounced limp accompanied by hip pain and difficulty in moving the hip in later stages of life.
  • Rheumatic diseases: Rheumatic diseases lead to structural deterioration of the hip joint.
  • Arthritis : It is the most common cause of pain in adults.
  • Infections: Germs spreading from another area of the body or directly coming can cause inflammation in the hip joint.
  • Tumors: Breast, lung and prostate cancers may spread to the hip joint and cause severe hip pain.
  • Vascular causes: Blockage of arteries supplying the hip bones or disruption of blood flow to here can give rise to hip pain.

Treatment
After the cause of hip pain is identified, a treatment aimed at eliminating such cause should be applied. Some patients are treated with medications. After the acute phase of the illness or following hip surgery, physical therapy and rehabilitation needs to be started. In suitable patients, exercise therapies with gait training in the pool accelerate recovery time.
