Stroke (Hemiplegia)

The term hemiplegia or stroke means loss of movement in and paralysis of the right or left half of the body.

Cerebral vascular diseases are in the first place among the causes of stroke. It may develop after head injuries, brain surgery and intoxication as well as in the case of a brain tumor or infectious diseases.

Stroke is the most common problem in brain and nervous system disorders worldwide. Stroke is often associated with obstruction of brain vessels or brain hemorrhage. This condition can cause neurological symptoms, including loss of voluntary movement in one half of the body or lack of movement, sensory disturbances and also communication (speech) disorders, visual field loss or cognitive disorders.

Risk factors that cause stroke particularly involve high blood pressure, diabetes, heart diseases, smoking, high cholesterol , obesity, and alcohol.

Symptoms
Symptoms of a stroke can be very different, but all the symptoms occur all of a sudden. The main symptoms of stroke are as follows:

  • Very severe headache
  • Confusion, confusing people, current time and place.
  • Numbness, weakness or inability to move in any arm, leg, or face.
  • Sudden disruption of speech
  • Loss of vision
  • Loss of balance or inability to do skills requiring coordination.

Treatment
Brain surgeons have several treatment options upon an early diagnosis of stroke. These include repair of an aneurysm bleeding in the head, removal of blood clots creating blockage in the brain or of plaques that may create blockage inside the brain after separating from carotid artery in the neck.

The purpose of drug therapy is to immediately minimize the damage to the brain tissue caused by brain hemorrhage or blockage, prevent its progression and ensure that brain functions are sustainable.

The aim of the rehabilitation is to bring physical functions of these people to the highest level. Rehabilitation efforts should be initiated as early as possible . Rehabilitation efforts consist of traditional methods, i.e. various joint movements, stretching exercises, muscle strengthening and movements.
