Cooling is applied to all burn wounds. In the following stage, various procedures are performed according to the depth of the burn.
First degree burns are usually left open and local topical antibiotic ointment is applied. No occlusive dressing is performed. First degree burns heal within 7-10 days.
Second-degree burns heal within 2-3 weeks. It takes a little more for deep second degree burns to heal. Burn wound is first washed with saline, then it is either closed with one of long-term occlusive materials or occlusive dressing is performed using one of burn ointments by changing the dressing daily. In third- degree burns, a treatment method in which eschar tissue is protected against infection during the time till surgery or existing infections are healed is followed.
