Salivary Gland Cancer

Salivary gland cancer is a rare form of cancer and can start in any salivary gland in your mouth, neck or throat. Although the exact cause of its occurrence is not known, smoking and radiation exposure are thought to be the triggers.

The symptoms of malignant and benign cancer are different. Symptoms of salivary gland tumours pain, facial paralysis, discoloration of the skin and rapidly growing swelling occur mainly in malignant tumours. Symptoms of a benign salivary gland tumours are only swelling. These swellings do not grow as quickly as in the malignant tumours and do not cause pain.

Treatment of salivary gland cancer usually requires surgery. Other treatments for salivary gland cancer may include radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
