Skin cancers

Of all types of cancer, skin cancer is the most common. To protect against skin cancer, what should be done is to protect yourself from the sun. Excessive sun exposure (including tanning) is the main cause of skin cancer. Although less effective, repeated exposure to medical and industrial X-rays, skin diseases that heal by leaving burns or scars, exposure to substances containing charcoal tar or arsenic, and the presence of skin cancer in the family are also among the causes of skin cancer.

Early diagnosis is the most important first step in definitive treatment. Therefore, it is important for people to examine their own skin periodically and to consult a skin doctor if there is a discolour change or sores that do not grow or go away.

Skin cancers are diagnosed by removing part of the mass and examining it under a microscope. There are many treatment procedures depending on the stage and place in which the cancer is present. The first treatment option is surgical intervention and the transplantation of tissue from another region instead of the cancerous tissue removed. If the cancerous part is inferable or spread to other organs, radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be involved.
